Trend Alert: Intricate Buns

With August's heat in full effect what better way to keep cool and look beautiful.  We have seen the trend of the braid to the maximum this summer but as summer end's we are noticing a lovely trend of intricate buns.

In order to get the drama of the intricate bun you'll need some extra hair!  Of course for a bun like this we'd recommend something affordable such as Sensationnel's Premium Now in 18" to add drama.

You will also need plenty of bobby pins and holding pins and a little flexible holding spray.  The more deconstructed the hair is the better.  The holding pins will secure the hair around your ponytail.  The bobby pins will  secure the random wrapping, twisting and braiding used to create your intricate bun.

Sensationnel Premium Now is sold at all Sunny's stores and starts around $39

Email us any pics that you might have of your intricate bun.

DIY Diva: Clairol Beautiful Collection Semi-Permanent Color

If you are a fan of Virgin Indian Hair then you love the versatility of texture and the longevity of the tresses.  However you also know that the hair’s natural brown tones may not exactly match your own.  Here’s a little DIY help for those of you that love your Indian Hair but crave jet black or deeper chocolate hues.

Our Sunny’s Staff recommends Clairol's Beautiful Collection Semi-Permanent Color for a quick fix to alter the tones of your hair extensions ($6.99 at your local Sunny’s).  This is a semi-permanent color with no ammonia or peroxide so it is safe to use on natural or relaxed hair in addition to your hair extensions.  So Sunny’s Girls if you're looking for a quick and inexpensive pick me up try a rinse or semi-permanent color. Be a DIY Diva!

Couple of tips:
Pay attn to your hair's moisture levels...color can tend to be drying for some textures.
Use an old throwaway towel to protect your clothing when applying the color.

In A Hair Rut? Try These Tips

Summer is quickly fading and fall is upon us.  This is the time of year when many of us fall victim to the itch of wanting to try something new.  If you’re suffering from the end of summer blues and want to revamp yourself, try these tips before making a move you may regret.

1. Don't get the "I'm Sick of My Hair" haircut. You're not as sick of it as you think, and you're not as sick of it as you will be the day after this haircut. Sleep on it, if a couple days pass and you really feel like you're ready to make a change, go for it.

2. Throw on a cute hat. Sometimes just not having to look at it for a day or two makes all the difference.  Our go-to faves are a military style baseball cap or a slouchy crochet beret.

3. Get a new wig. This is for my wig wearing Sunny’s Girls.  If you’ve fallen out of love with every wig you own then it is time for you to replenish your styles. Just like you have to clean out your closet, do the same with your wig stash.

4. Treat yourself. Whether it's a day at the spa or even with the hot salon in town that you've been dying to try. Having someone else pamper your tresses may make you realize that what you have isn't so bad after all.

We refuse to have a hair-tastrophe, so we’ll be taking all of these tips to heart as we get ready for fall. What do you ladies do when you're feeling blah and want to switch it up?

Swimming with Hair Extensions

People come into our stores all the time talking about how they want to get hair extensions for their next vacation.  But...we hate to break their hearts of their carefree fantasies involving jumping in and of the ocean and pools with drink in hand.... but hair extensions require maintenance.

We can't say it enough...so we will say it again... Hair Extensions require maintenance!

Chlorine and Salt Water can wreak havoc on your own tresses let alone someone else's.  The drying and striping effect cuts into the life of your extensions so here are a few tips is you want to maintain your hair extensions but still have fun:

1. Wet your hair before entering the pool with filtered water either from your bathroom or the shower at the pool.  This prevents your hair from absorbing too much of the salt or pool water.

2. Coat your strands with a rich and heavy hair mask or deep conditioner.  This will seal the cuticle to prevent it from absorbing any additional salts or chlorine.

3. Put your hair into a braid or bun! Do not let the ocean water agitate your hair that increases the risk of tangling

4. As soon as you are done swimming...run to the shower to rinse any water that you might have absorbed and rinse it clean.

5. Then use either a leave in  or preferably thermal protectant spray.

6. Deep condition with heat as soon as you can.

If you have blonde hair extensions... you really need to pay attention to every step less you end up with green hair that looks like straw!

So Sunny's Girls please take heed to our instructions and share them with friends....a real Sunny's Girl doesn't let other Sunny's Girls walk around with horrible hair extensions!

Maintaining your Hair Extensions

Hi Sunny's Girls.

A few of our Super Sunny's Girls shared with us a few tips on maintaining your pre-tipped hair extensions.

Tips for Strand by Strand Hair Extensions Maintenance

1. Never wash your hair more than once a week!  We know this sounds impossible.  But shampoo strips your hair of the moisture that the extensions so desperately need.  Think of how a rosebud acts once it is cut off from the rose bush!  You are in race against time with your moisture and ph balance, so washing your hair every day will ensure that your hair extensions won't last more than a month.  When you do shampoo use a product designed for hair with keratin treatments.  We find that those don't strip the hair too much.

If you want to wash your hair of the sweat and odors then use conditioners as a shampoo and rinse your hair.  Another option is to use dry shampoo.

2. When washing your pre-tipped hair, use a shammy or a micro fiber cloth to absorb all the moisture from the bonds of your pre-tipped hair.  The water sitting on the bonds can seep into the keratin bonds and weaken the keratin.

3. Never apply any heat tools within 2 inches of the bonds of the keratin.

4. Always brush your hair from root to tip every night with a loop brush!  We can't emphasize how much this simple tip makes all the difference between healthy hair and no hair.  Your hair will tangle into the keratin bonds if you don't brush your hair.  Even if one or two bonds fall out...it's better to keep combing your hair and replacing the bonds than shaving off your head of dreadlocks.

5. Clarify your hair before applying keratin hair extensions.  You want a clean grip on the hair shaft so that the bonds won't slip out over time.

6. Don't get a trim before installing hair extensions, your fresh ends won't blend well with your hair extensions!

Hair Extensions are an investment.  While they are great they require maintenance.  If you don't think you are up for the challenge then consider clip in extensions...no fuss no muss.  But think of it like an expensive Porsche; you wouldn't buy it and then never change it's oil or get maintenance checks.  So if you are going to spend the money on the hair and service, these few tips really do make a difference between your extensions lasting 6 weeks and 6 months.

We hope this helps Sunny's Girls!
