Hydrate, Hydrate!

We all love fun in the sun, but it can wreak havoc on our tresses.  A day at the beach or pool is great, but when you’re left with dry brittle hair no one is happy.  The secret to reversing the damage: steaming!  Better than regular deep conditioning, steaming allows for deeper penetration of moisture into the hair.

You will not need a plastic cap like you normally do under a hooded dryer. By sitting under the steamer with your hair uncovered, you allow the steam to fully hydrate your hair. When steaming at home be sure to cover your shoulders with a towel and also a roll of cotton to go around your edges to catch the "drippies."

To have your own personal steam experience:

Summer Hair: Go Big or Go Home!

One of our favorite brands of hair for the summer is Bohyme Brazilian Wave.  It has developed a cult following among our natural Sunny’s Girls because it blends so seamlessly w/ their curls.  Unlike the Virgin Indian Natural Curl, Brazilian Wave responds well to gel, mousse, leave-in conditioners, and other styling aids.  So if you love to turn heads when you walk in a room (and we know you do), then this hair is for you!

Here is a great video with tips on how to take care of your Brazilian Wave once it is installed:

Product We Love: ECO-Exquisite Natural Sleep Cap

This great product has become a customer favorite at Sunny’s Atlanta and is flying off of the shelves.  Different from the traditional bonnet, the Eco-Exquisite natural sleep cap has an elongated back to allow your hair to “hang” in the back while you sleep.  So no more of that annoying bunching in the back while you sleep.

“The ECOSOQ™ Natural Sleep Cap is an innovative cap designed to cover hair from the root to the tip, as it hangs. Traditional “satin” bonnets require stuffing longer hair into insufficiently shaped head coverings. Your coverage dilemmas are solved! The ECOSOQ™ Natural Sleep Cap is easy to apply and contains an enclosed sack to accommodate hanging hair.
The ECOSOQ™ Natural Sleep Cap is also made of natural cotton sateen as opposed to polyester “satin”. Natural cotton sateen offers the same benefit of a silky, smooth surface but it doesn’t stop there. It is a sustainable textile made from a renewable fiber, that offers breathability. Natural cotton sateen fabric can be recycled and is biodegradable.
Product Features
  • Breathable to Control night time sweating by absorbing sweat
  • Covered elastic to avoid hairline damage and render a perfect fit
  • Sack to cover and protect hair as it hangs"

Have Hair, Will Travel

Even though your schedule maybe all over the place, there is no excuse for your fabulous to suffer. Here are a few tips to make sure every Sunny’s Girl’s look is in tip-top shape while she jet-sets.

1. Satin is Your Savior

Cotton pillowcases are the devil! They rob your hair of precious moisture. Pack a satin bonnet, pillowcase, or scarf in your carry-on bag to wear at night and you are guaranteed to preserve your style throughout your trip.

2. Downsize Your Goodies

Please don't rely on hotel shampoos and conditioners...unless you're staying at the Four Seasons or The Ritz :) If this is a budget or business trip you don't want to use chain hotel products and expect your usual results. If you can't find travel size bottles of your regular products, make your own. In the beauty section of every major drugstore there are great empty containers that you can use for all your special treats your hair loves.

3. Always Have a Back-up

A true Sunny’s Girl is never caught unprepared. A great half-wig, ponytail, or clip-ins are a necessity when traveling. If you need to look refreshed near the end of a long trip, any of these items will give you a quick fix and have you out of your hotel room in a breeze.

While we here at Sunny’s Hair & Wigs are all about hair we know that it doesn't rule your life. Whether traveling for business or pleasure, the last thing anyone wants to be worried about is their hair. Hopefully these quick and easy tips will make your next trip a good one.

Happy travels Sunny’s Girls!

Spring 2012 - From the Runway to You

Spring is here Sunny's Girls!  Straight off of the runways of New York Fashion Week here are three looks we love for you all to try.  Thanks to RealBeauty.com we spent hours lusting over all of these fab looks and here are our faves:

1. Slicked Back

This look is a classic for a reason...effortless beauty that showcases the gorgeous Sunny's Girls you are.  Seen on the runway at the Cushnie et Ochs show, the hair was the accessory, not the center of attention.  For a twist on this look you can also slick your hair back into a low pony or loose bun.

2. Retro

Lush waves w/ a deep center part, exaggerated cat eye sunglasses, and a slouchy blazer in an amazing color...Ultra 70's Glam!!! This look was showcased in the Rebecca Minkoff show and we can't get enough.  Clip-ins for volume or Natural Curly Virgin Indian hair (brushed out) can help you recreate this look.

3. Wrap it Up

Deep waves topped off with a spectacular turban...swoon!  Anna Sui's models were show stoppers in this look.  Pair with a strong lip and you are ready to go.  Scour your favorite vintage shop or thrift store for the perfect head piece.  If turban's aren't your thing, try a vintage silk scarf.  For hair, volume and length are key (Apex 101 Body Wave Indian Clip-ins in 16").

Product Spotlight: Henry Margu Revitalizing Mist

If you are a Sunny's Girl that loves her wigs, then you know that proper upkeep is essential to keep your favorite girl as fabulous as the day you brought her home.  Henry Margu Revitalizing Mist is an absolute lifesaver to keep your wig refreshed and as good as new.  A few light sprays rids your wig of tangles or rough ends.  It is also great for refreshing the synthetic fibers with a natural sheen.  As always we recommend a wide tooth plastic comb or wig brush for styling.

If you've always wanted to try a wig but don't know where to start, visit your local Sunny's Hair and Wigs and speak with the on site wig specialist for a consultation.

Dating and your 'Do

There comes a time after meeting a guy that the question of hair becomes inevitable. Whether it's dealing with "morning after" hair or if you're like us, explaining the mystery of why our hair changes like our shoes :) Here are a few Sunny's Girls tips to make your dating life work with and not against your hair.

1. The Overnight Visit
Now sometimes this is planned, but most of the time it is um shall we say, kind of impromptu. We recommend always keeping a couple of covered elastic hair bands and bobby pins in your purse. A low ponytail or a cute messy bun can make your morning after look much more pulled together. (dark sunglasses also help lol)

2. Falls/Half-wigs
Sorry to break it to you ladies, but falls and half-wigs are single girl territory. They are not secure enough for anything more than a quick peck hello/goodbye and the stray hand caressing your hair can end up with you mortified as your date holds your wig in his hand. Save these for a girl's night out...not one with the hot guy you've been dying to date.

3. Clip-ins
These are the way to go! If you're going on an outdoorsy date (hiking, tennis, biking) you can make a cute ponytail. Intimate dinner? You'll have an extra boost of confidence that only takes minutes to achieve.

4. Sew-in
Going on an exotic island vacation? A sew-in is a must for a no muss no fuss adventure. Your time is meant to be frolicking on the beach, sipping fruity drinks while your beau rubs suntan lotion on your pretty shoulders...not stuck in your hotel suite stressing over your hair. Try curly/wavy locks in a sexy length (20" or longer is a must!) and we guarantee you'll have him under your spell.

Dating should be fun, and your hair should be an addition to the fun, not a distraction. For those chameleon Sunny's Girls like us that are always trying something different, Part 2 will focus on how to keep your fabulous while making sure that your guy gets to know the "real" you. Til' then...enjoy date night Sunny's Girls!

Celeb looks we love: Kelly Rowland on Chelsea Lately

Ms. Handler is giving the beauty world a lot to talk about.  We mentioned Ms. Conrad earlier but we were floored with Ms. Rowland's sexy and open interview on Chelsea Lately.

We love her hair though.  The boobs too and her tiny waistline...but we really love her hair.

To get that Diana Ross look we always recommend a really tightly coiled bundle of Natural Curl Indian Hair.  We'd use 16" to get the fullness she has and then set the little amount of hair left out on small rods to recreate the same curl pattern or use a tiny curling iron.

Celeb looks we Love: Lauren Conrad on Chelsea Lately

LC always finds a way to experiment with beauty and hair trends in a way that feels appropriate to go out in Hollywood on Saturday night but meet up with her boyfriend's parents for brunch on Sunday.  She gives just enough sugar and just a pinch of spice.

So the low down on how to achieve her effortless braid is to braid one section of the hair before you make the big braid.  Allow strands of hair to fall in your face and deconstruct the braid once it is completed.

Sunny's Tweet Up Recap

Oshi mingling with Sunny's Twitter Followers
Sunny's Stylist Oshi & Sunny's Girl

On January 27 our Sunny's Stylist Oshi hosted our Tweet & Meet for our Sunny's Twitter Followers.  Taking questions and having on-site consultations with cocktails and cupcakes in hand we had such a good time getting to meet our Sunny's Girls.  We also learned a lot!

Here are a few tips we learned from Oshi:

1.  Work with the right type of hair.  Find hair that blends with your texture and test it before installing it.  Vigorously wash your hair to look for any abnormalities.

2. Invest in good shampoos.  A dry shampoo for daily use and a sulfate free shampoo for weekly use.

3. Communicate with your stylist.  Great hair is the result of a good relationship.  Tell your stylist if you have breakage, stress spots etc. to partner for great hair.

Love is in the Hair: Valentine's Day Hair Ideas

Charlize Theron's Golden Globes Headband

1. Consider Romantic Adornments.  At this year's Golden Globes we saw the re-emergence of the headband as a etheral and romantic.  Nothing rekindles romance like coquettish and innocent hair.  To bring out the puppy love feeling for Valentines Day set your hair on hot rollers and using a mix of bobby pins and holding pins secure your hair to one side.  Set with a light hold hairspray and add a headband.  Sunny's has some great romantic headbands in stock starting at $20 & up.

Victoria's Secret Sexy
2.  Follow Victoria's Secret Lead.  When women ask what type of hair do men find sexiest....we always direct them to the blueprint of sexy:  Victoria's Secret.  You never see women with stick straight hair or super curly hair in their pages.  It's because men love soft touchable hair that looks flirtatious and effortless.  So grab some 14" clips in hair extensions and a curling wand and begin placing some random waves in your hair... let it set with light hairspray and then run your fingers through your hair and put on your demure sexy smile and a call it wrap.

Simply, Sexy & Stunning
3. Pony it up: Men love a good old-fashioned ponytail with a twist.  Pay homage to screen goddess Kate Beckinsdale with a custom made wrap around ponytail to give a little umph to your night.  Use your own hair to create a ponytail and then clip on your added hair and wrap the remaining hair around with a bobby pin.  Create some volume with strategically placed curls.

Celeb looks we Love: Taylor Swift on Vogue's Cover

She should always look like this... an feminine lithe tribute to the 1970's Taylor Swift stuns on this month's cover of Vogue.  We love her hair straight with bangs.

If you are wondering what you look like with bangs stop by Sunny's we have some great and affordable clip in bangs.  I'll be honest they only look good on about 40% of customers.  You need the right balance of layers and face shape  to carry it off....but if on the other side you get the Taylor Swift effect...it's worth a try.

A Sunny's Girl Guide to Finding the Right Stylist

To me... you are not really a woman until you have found the right hairstylist.  An amazing hairstylist is like a portal to the world of fabulosity and a life long friendship.

Yet I see so many women who are held in what could only be described as an abusive relationship.  They suffer crippling damage to their hair and hairline, are constantly waiting and unable to predict what their day would look like the second the step into the salon...and to top it all off have horrible hair...that they themselves know is horrible but they don't speak up.

So.... as someone who has lived in 5 cities in the past 15 years I can offer some insight into finding the perfect hairstylist.

1. Know what you need:
Not everyone's hair requires the same needs.  For some women, they haven't had a true haircut in a decade.  They just need someone to maintain the health and shine of their hair.  Other women need color that looks like it has been painted on by the hands of an angel.  Once you know what you are really looking for in a stylist then you can start out on your search.

2. Ask and be bold:
Look to trusted sources to get their recommendation on a hairstylist.  I think the staff at Sunny's or any high end beauty boutique is a great place to start.  Also look around at malls, events and people you walk by on the street.  Don't be afraid to start with a smile, compliment their hair and ask who does it.  This has been the sure fire way that I have found some of the best stylists.

3. Use Concrete Examples:
Once you have the name of the stylist don't just make an appointment.  This guarantees that you will just be treated as another client in the day.  You need to make yourself stand out and start out on the best foot with your new potential stylists.  This is an interview.  You should arrive looking like the best representation of you day in...day out.  If you wear Louboutin's everyday don't show up in sweats and vice versa.   Schedule a consultation and bring examples of your hair in the past and examples of celebrities WHO HAVE HAIR LIKE YOU to the consultation.  Please do not show up with Jennifer Aniston's picture if people always tell you you look like Kerry Washington!

4. Speak Up
If something doesn't feel right...speak up. It's your hair. Don't apologize...don't hedge your words just directly say... please don't shampoo my hair too strong etc.   Practice lowering the tone of your voice and speaking directly in the mirror before going to your appointment. Role playing is a great way to harness your strengths and prepare yourself for success with your stylist.

5. Be Patient
While this sounds contradictory.  Give your stylist two or three times to get doing your hair down pat.

Notes on a Ponytail: Chrissy Lampkin's 32" Pony on Love & Hip Hop

We love Love & Hip Hop!  It's fun to see these ladies add they're own stamp on fashion and trends by representing NYC/NJ in a new way.

So we especially love Chrissy Lampkin and Jim Jones.  They just represent street love in a way that is approachable.  We were excited during the engagement scene in Miami but we were absolutely taking notes on Chrissy's Ponytail.

It has to be atleast 32" of hair and she just owns it....each and every inch.
Custom Wrap Around Ponytail from Sunny's

To recreate her look you need a human hair wraparound ponytail.  Something like this has to be custom made.  Our Atlanta store has the infamous Ricco Thomas who can make custom ponytails for $100.  It is definitely worth adding to your hair tool kit Sunny's Girls.

Call 404-355-7077 to set up an appointment for your custom pony or drop into our Atlanta store.
