New Year, New You!

The start of the new year is always a time to revamp and assess your current look.  Here are some of the most popular Hair Resolutions from our Sunny’s Staff and some tips to achieve them:

1.     New Look
If you’re itching to try a new look but not ready to commit…try a fun wig!  Wigs are a great way to try out a new haircut or color without any of the post-new year regrets.

2.     Healthy Hair
Just like our bodies, healthy hair starts from the inside out.  Start taking hair vitamins, up your water intake, and get moving!  The most fab Sunny’s Girls know that a healthy lifestyle and healthy hair go hand in hand.

3.     Long Hair
Long flowing hair doesn’t happen overnight, but with solid commitment and a great hair regimen it can be yours.  What better time to start than the new year?  If you’ve been hanging on to sad, damaged, lifeless ends…get a trim!  Start deep conditioning your hair 1 to 2x a month (a must for any hair type or texture).  Also find a cute protective style that your love to protect your ends from the rest of the winter (the high bun is hot right now and the perfect style to save your ends from winter sweaters & coats).  In just a few months you will definitely see a difference!

Sunny’s Girls what are your hair resolutions this year?

Kim Kardashian: A Look we Love?

We go overboard on her.  We fell off the wagon on her for awhile, but honestly no one is a better as a muse for beauty.  She loves to experiment with looks while offering a consistency of beauty branding that is unique.

For a recent photo shoot she added in some candy paint red hair extensions?  What are your thoughts?  We can quite decide.

Want These Waves? Then you need these!

If you love luscious waves and covet the fab hair of Celebrity Hairnistas like Kim Kardashian, then flexible rods need to be the next addition to your hair arsenal. (more)

The video below gives the low-down on these easy to use rollers:

“Bendy hair curlers are made of a soft, flexible foam, which sits gently on the head to create voluminous curls. A basic rolling technique, which starts at the tip of the hair and works its way up to the scalp, and the right amount of tension will help you create that beautiful, bouncy head of hair using bendy hair curlers. These curlers are ideally suited to a slightly longer length of hair because they can remain secure on the head.

  1. Part your hair down the middle back of your head into two even sections. Drape each section of hair over your shoulder.
  2. Pull out a section of hair near the back of the head that measures between one to two inches, depending on the thickness of your hair. Thicker hair will require rolling smaller sections of hair, while you can roll finer hair in larger chunks.
  3. Brush the section of hair with a hairbrush from the roots to the tips. Spray with a setting product from root to tip. Be careful to only lightly spray the section, rather than drenching the hair.
  4. Place the bendy curler at the tip of the hair and tuck the tips under the bendy curler. Roll the curler up towards your scalp, keeping a steady tension between the hair roots and the curler.
  5. Bend the bendy curler into a "U" shape once the curler hits the scalp. Be sure that the bendy curler hits the scalp. If necessary, bend the curler into a complete "O" shape to hold loose hair in place.
  6. Allow hair to set for a few hours. The hair should be completely dry from the setting product before you remove the curlers. To remove the bendy curlers, unbend from the "O" or "U" shape and unwind. Once you have removed all of the bendy curlers, tousle the curls gently with your fingers. “

You can vary the size of the rods depending on the size of waves/curls you’re looking for.  These require no heat so there is no risk of damage to your hair or your hair extensions.  These rods at varying sizes can be found at your local Sunny’s starting at only $3.99.

Product Spotlight: Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo

Whenever I straighten my hair... I love it the first few days....but catch me on day 3 and I am an oily mess.  I have tried powders,  dry shampoos of every type but recently I have found my new love: Oscar Blandi Volumizing Dry Shampoo

The shampoo goes on clear and has a neutralizing odor nothing too strong.   The trick that I learned is that you must use dry shampoo before you need it!  This dry shampoo is perfect because it doesn't leave a build up and isn't drying.  Instead it infuses your hair with texture and volume.

I'd highly recommend this dry shampoo to anyone with strand by strand extensions.  It allows you to keep your roots free from oil and sweat so that the extensions don't slide out your hair before they are ready to come out.

Does anyone have any dry shampoo that they prefer?

Removing your Extensions: A primer

We all hate to take out our extensions, no matter how beautiful you are you just feel less pretty when you lose your 4-12 ounces of someone else's luxurious locks.  But the key to wearing hair extensions is to understand that they are the ultimate accessory not neccesity.

So here a few tips on removing your hair extensions without damaging your hair:

1. Prep your hair for removal with a good hot oil treatment.  Saturate your tresses with either olive, coconut or a blend of tea tree oil & jojoba.   This protects and soothes the cuticles of your hair and prevents tangles.  (tip if you can't reach your hair because it is in a sew-in make use a color application bottle to reach the hair in braids)

2.  VISIT A SALON:  especially if you are taking out strand by strand extensions!  You want to go to a stylist who is certified and trained in hair extensions removal.  If you have a sew in make sure your stylist is aware they will be removing your extensions before your appointment.

3. Once your extensions are completely removed DO NOT WET!  Take the time with your tresses. There is a lot of shed hair that needs to come out.  Please start with your fingers to comb through your hair and then move to a wide tooth comb.  Now is a good time to reapply a heavier oil to ensure you aren't causing any breakage.

4. Wash your hair in two- four sections depending on how much hair you have.  This will further ensure that you aren't contributing to tangles.  Do not agitate the hair too much during your first shampoo. Focus on the scalp but don't agitate the hair too much.

5. Do a protein treatment.  Depending on how much breakage you have.  Follow with a light moisturizing conditioner.

6. Know when to take a break from extensions!!!  If you have had at least two sets of extensions back to back or have had extensions in for more than six months consecutively...time to take a break!!

7. Tips on taking a break from extensions:  Skip the clip in and opt for a fun custom made ponytail.  With your hair in a ponytail people won't notice that you don't have your hair is as much.  Even better... experiment with the new braid trend everyone is rocking.   Give yourself at least 2 weeks with nothing on your scalp and nothing agitating your hair!

Sunny's Girls: A word on Hair Supply

Hi Sunny's Girls,

We don't often write a too the point letter to our devoted fans but we wanted to address our true hairnistas.  You know who you are... you can't imagine life without your hair extensions, you buy hair like some people buy groceries ( we could go on and on but we'll spare you because you know who you are).

A true hairnista knows that good hair is hard to come by. Not all bundles are created equal and some batches of hair are legendary  (you wore it for 3 years than lent it to your sister who then made clip ins from it etc.)  While others...you just don't love, it sheds a little more than you'd like etc.

So we wanted to give a word to the wise of our true Sunny's Girls.  Due to recent economic issues the supply chain for human hair extensions are very very tight!

Some of these factors include:
  • Increased global demand for Remy Hair Extensions (especially from emerging markets like Brazil, and Nigeria
  • Weakening value of US dollar relative to other currencies
  • Increased working wages and worker's demands for rights in countries producing the hair ( China and India)
  • Hair is a natural resource
These factors have put stress on many of our vendors recently. For instance, Bohyme Brazilian Wave has been out of stock for over three months with no end in sight.  Bobbi Boss by Indi Remy is out of stock of all hair textures until October.

We ask of you that you be patient with us through these trying times for a hairnista.  We can work with to you to recommend backup products in case your old faithful is out of stock.

We also recommend that you take better care of your hair extensions so that they last longer.  We recommending sealing wefts so that you ensure minimal shedding.

Also...if you have a product that you love and can't live without and it is in stock: order more!  This way you have it as a back for your next appointment.

But have no fear...the times will change!

New Product Spotlight: Le Prive Pre-Tipped Hair Extensions

We have been carrying pre-tipped hair extensions for a long time! A long time favorite brand at all of our retail locations and website was 909 and 808 hair extensions.

A few weeks ago we were informed by 808 and 909 that in order to control the supply of their hair they were going to limit the markets that could sell their brand.  Sunny's Hair & Wigs retail locations will continue to sell 808 & 909 hair extensions.   Our website will not.

We were a little thrown off by this announcement to be honest.  We were left with a major project!  To find a new vendor of pre-tipped extensions that lived up to the color range and quality that 909 and 808 offers!

So after trying out several brands, vigorously testing the hair ourselves we have selected a new brand to replace 808 and 909 online:  Le Prive Pre-Tipped Hair Extensions!
A little on why we love 909 & 808:
  • The keratin tips on Le Prive Pre-Tipped extensions are flat and hard. The keratin reminds us of Great Lengths tips.  This allows for the hair to stay in a long time and for the bonds not to get gummy over time.  It also sits really flat...so the bonds don't peek out (a la Britney Spears)
  • The I tip hair is super tiny. Which allows for invisible small micro beads!
  • The hair does not look over processed.
  • The blonde colors are still ashy not to golden or strawberry
  • It is available in Body Wave and Silky Straight in 16, 18 and 20"
The prices start at 129.00 for 16" which is great!  The packages contain 100 strands which allows one pack to do a full head of extensions.  They also retail small packages (highlighter packs or maintenance packs)  that have 30 pieces starting at $60.

So... if you are looking to replace 808 online try the Le Prive Pre-Tipped Extensions

Looking to replace 909 try Bohyme Pre-Tipped Extensions

OR... consider trying our best selling pre tipped hair which is Virgin Indian Hair.

We would also love to hear your feedback on our new product!

Trend Alert: Intricate Buns

With August's heat in full effect what better way to keep cool and look beautiful.  We have seen the trend of the braid to the maximum this summer but as summer end's we are noticing a lovely trend of intricate buns.

In order to get the drama of the intricate bun you'll need some extra hair!  Of course for a bun like this we'd recommend something affordable such as Sensationnel's Premium Now in 18" to add drama.

You will also need plenty of bobby pins and holding pins and a little flexible holding spray.  The more deconstructed the hair is the better.  The holding pins will secure the hair around your ponytail.  The bobby pins will  secure the random wrapping, twisting and braiding used to create your intricate bun.

Sensationnel Premium Now is sold at all Sunny's stores and starts around $39

Email us any pics that you might have of your intricate bun.

DIY Diva: Clairol Beautiful Collection Semi-Permanent Color

If you are a fan of Virgin Indian Hair then you love the versatility of texture and the longevity of the tresses.  However you also know that the hair’s natural brown tones may not exactly match your own.  Here’s a little DIY help for those of you that love your Indian Hair but crave jet black or deeper chocolate hues.

Our Sunny’s Staff recommends Clairol's Beautiful Collection Semi-Permanent Color for a quick fix to alter the tones of your hair extensions ($6.99 at your local Sunny’s).  This is a semi-permanent color with no ammonia or peroxide so it is safe to use on natural or relaxed hair in addition to your hair extensions.  So Sunny’s Girls if you're looking for a quick and inexpensive pick me up try a rinse or semi-permanent color. Be a DIY Diva!

Couple of tips:
Pay attn to your hair's moisture levels...color can tend to be drying for some textures.
Use an old throwaway towel to protect your clothing when applying the color.

In A Hair Rut? Try These Tips

Summer is quickly fading and fall is upon us.  This is the time of year when many of us fall victim to the itch of wanting to try something new.  If you’re suffering from the end of summer blues and want to revamp yourself, try these tips before making a move you may regret.

1. Don't get the "I'm Sick of My Hair" haircut. You're not as sick of it as you think, and you're not as sick of it as you will be the day after this haircut. Sleep on it, if a couple days pass and you really feel like you're ready to make a change, go for it.

2. Throw on a cute hat. Sometimes just not having to look at it for a day or two makes all the difference.  Our go-to faves are a military style baseball cap or a slouchy crochet beret.

3. Get a new wig. This is for my wig wearing Sunny’s Girls.  If you’ve fallen out of love with every wig you own then it is time for you to replenish your styles. Just like you have to clean out your closet, do the same with your wig stash.

4. Treat yourself. Whether it's a day at the spa or even with the hot salon in town that you've been dying to try. Having someone else pamper your tresses may make you realize that what you have isn't so bad after all.

We refuse to have a hair-tastrophe, so we’ll be taking all of these tips to heart as we get ready for fall. What do you ladies do when you're feeling blah and want to switch it up?
